I recently spent several nights working my way through the new DVD collection of Finnish Director Aki Kaurismäki’s films, and ended up writing on his profoundly bleak yet sympathetic humour.
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki once promised that having made11 lousy films, he’d make 30 more, just to prove to himself that he’d never outdo his idol, Yasujirō Ozu. But Kaurismäki has only made 18 features and announced earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival that, there will be no more films. By his own metric he’s failed. But failure, and the constant desire to escape from it, is a common thread throughout the miserabilist director’s films.
The review, Anywhere but here: rediscovering the films of Aki Kaurismäki, is now up on Tank Magazine.
