Kvadrat: A Design Family for Port Magazine

The interior of the new Kvadrat showroom in Pakhus 48. A large minimalist space filled with draped fabric samples.

Late last month I travelled to Copenhagen for 36 hours to do a series of interviews for Port Magazine. Almost as soon as the plane had landed I was chatting with the French designer Erwan Bouroullec—one half of the renowned Bouroullec Brothers—and Anders Byriel, the CEO of Danish textile manufacturers Kvadrat. While the name may seem unusual, you almost certainly will have seen their products. Kvadrat supply high quality textiles to architects, furniture manufacturers, and frequently work with artists and lifestyle brands. Kvadrat have just opened a new showroom in the former freeport area of the Copenhagen docks, designed by the Bouroullecs, and I went along to see the space and hear more.

The closeness of the relationship between the brand and the brothers is such that neither Erwan, nor Kvadrat CEO Anders Byriel, can remember when they first brought up the idea of the new showroom. “Anders never exactly asked, because we saw each other all the time,” says Erwan. Together, they seem to understand each other’s needs and interests and talk simply of how natural it was that they would work with each other.
